In the not too distant future, the united networks will stretch to the stars. Electrons will zip back and forth across the universe. However, advanced technology has not completely erased the differences between nations. Mamoru Oshii, a Japanese director known for his special films, guides the genre's spiritually adventure-hungry fans into the unknown realms of the computer universe in his cult animated film.
"A true cyberpunk story, with ghosts and hackers. 'Is the cybernetic brain capable of creating its own spirit?' - asks Kuszanagi, the heroine. In other words, its own replicant. Because if so, then what is the point of being human? If the new, emerging intelligence combines the positive qualities of homo sapiens and machines, then indeed it does - the film suggests, illustrating well that our fears of cyborgs are slowly fading into oblivion.
